The Niagara river is the river that connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The river contains Niagara falls which is a popular tourist destination which also makes shipping impossible leading to the construction of canals such as the Erie and Welland canals to allow ships to bypass the falls. The river is used to produce electricity for the nearby communities via hydroelectric power plants.
